SHEDDING THE LIGHT ON PROJECTION

How Big Should My Screen Be?

Proper screen size may be the least understood part of projecting an appropriate image. Depending on the application you are using a screen for will help determine its size. If you are installing a home theater, you may want to oversize your screen to give you a theater feel, but if using the screen for a meeting, you will need to determine what size screen will work best. A screen that is too small for a room will be difficult to see from a far distance. Too large and the participants of your meeting feel like they are in a theater.

To determine how big a screen should be for meeting space, you can use this simple formula - MDV (most distant viewer) / 8. Measure or estimate the distance from the screen to the person farthest away from the screen and divide by 8. This will give you an approximate height for the screen, round up to the nearest common size. Common screens sizes start at 4 feet and go up to 20 feet in one foot increments. This formula works for both screens with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.

Screen placement for a typical meeting room should most commonly be centered in the room, with the bottom of the screen at approximately eye level of your participants or between 40 – 50 inches. For home theaters, your screen will again be centered but the height can be as low as 30 inches.
